marathons.

my brother pete came to visit a couple weeks ago. he signed up for the vancouver USA marathon in vancouver, washington, and he of course spent the week with me to see what all the excitement was about in portland!

the marathon was on a sunday, and i found him a few times along the way, and then jumped in and finished it with him from the 18 or 19 mile mark. he finished in 4:30... incredible. i just can't imagine running that many miles.

the next night i had a little bbq and invited some friends from the neighborhood.

i had to work most of the days he was here, so he explored mt hood, the gorge and downtown portland on his own. but i did get one day off, so we drove to manzanita to stay for the night. the next morning we got up and drove from manzanita to astoria and home, stopping at a few fun places along the way. we got to do a little tide pooling at hug point and did a little wading at cannon beach. by the time we got to astoria, it was later in the day, so we walked around the town some and then grabbed a snack at a microbrewery. i definitely want to go back to astoria and see more of it.

we got to manzanita about 9pm... just had time to walk down to the grayness of the beach before the sun went down. maybe you have to live here to appreciate the fog and socked in beauty of this rugged coastline. maybe not. i have no idea. i love summer days like this at the coast.
the next day was nicer, though, with blue skies. i love those days too!
we stopped at hug point since the tides were low so pete could find some cool tide pool creatures. we found a lot of sea anemones and a few sea stars.

i love hug point because there's the cool cave in the rocks and the little waterfall the flows down to the ocean from the mountains.
here's the view from inside the cave. i just liked how this picture turned out. it's enigmatic.

and then we stopped at cannon beach and it was warm enough to walk in the water. so we did. including morton.
pete hunted around hug point and then cannon beach for more sea stars, and there were quite a few.

thanks pete for coming to visit!!!
