the special day.

my good friends kate and greg have a son who was in my preschool class 2 years ago. so for jackson's birthday, i gave him an afternoon with teacher chrissy doing kitchen science. i presented him with a bag of glue, liquid starch, corn starch, borax, vinegar and baking soda, and the recipes for oobleck, gak, flubber and a volcanic eruption.

he kept calling it his "special day", which i thought was awesome. when he arrived he handed me a card that said, "CHRISSY. TAKE YOU FOR MY SPECIAL DAY. LOVE JACKSON." to which i promptly replied, "well, jackson, we haven't had the day yet. what if it doesn't end up to be special?" he thought about that for a few seconds and then said, "no, i think it will be special."

and so it was.

we started by collecting things around the yard to make a volcano. one of the things we grabbed was a tall metal outdoor end table from the back porch. we built our volcano up as tall as we could and then i gave him the ingredients for the eruption. we cut the bottom off a plastic cup and filled it with baking soda. then he dropped lots of food coloring into a jar of vinegar without spilling a drop, which was impressive for a 6 year old. then the eruptions began. and if you know 6 year olds, the eruptions continued until we ran out of vinegar, which turned out to be the limiting factor.
next up was oobleck. corn starch and water... and man, this stuff kept us occupied for a long time. we were especially excited about punching it. if you punched it fast, you just made little knuckle marks in the top which disappeared immediately. but if you punched in slow motion, your fist went right through it... good times.

next was gak. jackson chose to make the gak green, with about 1/4 bottle of coloring. whoa. gak is the right word. messy and slimy. we quickly packaged that one up to be played with at home outside. and probably played with naked since its bright green color promised to ruin everything it touched.

last came the flubber... which jackson chose to make pink with blue glitter. love that about jackson.
and we were interrupted not long after we started on the flubber by mina, whose grandparents own the house. she was in jackson's class the same year, and she and her dad were coming to test out the zipline. well... how can flubber possibly compete with that? so we ziplined for a while until jackson's dad and sister showed up, so then everyone was ziplining and having a grand old time.

here's jackson heading up and going down.
and here's his sister samantha...
and here's mina, although she was pretty hesitant! since this day i don't think she's gone down the whole way again.
eventually we combined the flubber and bagged it up to be played with later.
happy 6th birthday jackson! cheers to our special day!
